Placement Testing
Students are placed into English and math courses based on the following criteria. The criteria are verified through official transcript or from a score report:
- Graduation from a United States public high school, private high school, or home school that operates in compliance with State or local law with an unweighted GPA.
- For GED scores after 2020 total GPI/4 with a result of 2.8 or higher will allow college-level placement; or
- For any HiSet and GED scores before 2019, total GPI/5 with a result of 2.8 or higher will allow college-level placement; or
- SAT scores prior to 1/1/2012 of 510 reading or writing and 510 math. SAT scores prior to 3/1/2016 of 500 or higher in critical reading or writing and 500 or higher in math; or SAT scores after 3/1/2016 of 480 or higher in evidence-based reading and writing and 530 or higher in math. Scores must be less than ten (10) years old at the time of application to Bladen Community College; or
- ACT scores earned after 3/1/2014 of 22 or higher in reading or 18 or higher in English, and 22 or higher in math will allow college level placement. ACT scores of 16-17 in English, 20-21 in reading, and a 20-21 in math will allow placement with an addition of a one (1) hour transition support course. ACT scores must be less than ten (10) years old at the time of application to Bladen Community College; or
- Qualifying Accuplacer score (see chart below); or
- An Associate degree or higher earned from a regional or nationally accredited institution; or
- A grade of “C” or better in college-level English and math courses earned from a regional or nationally accredited institution; or
- If an applicant has taken an Advanced Placement (AP) English or math test while in high school and has earned a score of 3 or above; or
- If an applicant has taken a College Level Examination Program (CLEP) English or math test and has earned a score of 50 or above; or
- If an applicant is enrolling as a non-degree seeking student taking courses with no prerequisite(s).
- Students placed into MAT 025 must take MAT 035 before attempting MAT 171 if a gateway math class has not been successfully completed with a "C" or higher.

- For GED, HiSet, an official transcript can be obtained through DiplomaSender.com. For Bladen CC adult education official transcripts, contact the College Readiness office.
- Students must register with the college to take the test for free. Those needing to test for another institution can do so at our testing center with a free voucher from the college they are applying to or through Bladen Community College for $15.
- Students without a verified high school GPA or GPI must achieve the minimum test score on the ACCUPLACER to enroll in Gateway English and Math courses. Otherwise, the student will be placed into transition courses.
